The Wonder Weeks March 28, 2017 at 09:48PM

via Facebook http://ift.tt/2nKEMJR "Your baby’s brain is only 25% developed at birth and grows exponentially in the first few years of life. Frequent night-time nursing and the essential fatty-acids it provides helps build an extraordinary number of synaptic pathways. Brain development goes hand in hand with physical development. Therefore when your baby learns to crawl or walk the extra neurological construction is immense. In turn, the nutritional needs increase and night-time feedings do too. Similarly as your baby grows they begin to discriminate between attachment figures - with this new consciousness comes the possibility of separation anxiety. This anxiety can exist at night where it may not have done before and is a normal expression of the meaningfulness of a secure attachment. In other words, the ebb and flow of how much sleep or sleep-waking occurs is dependent on your child’s milestones, myriad day-time experiences and the stimulating loving interactions on which they thrive."

Parents 'control' their children in one of 2 ways — and only one leads to happier kids March 20, 2017 at 11:50AM

"A study from University College London found that people who perceived their parents as less psychologically controlling and more caring as they were growing up were likely to be happier and more satisfied as adults. On the flip side, the people whose parents applied greater psychological control as they were growing up exhibited significantly lower mental well-being throughout their adult lives; in fact, the effect was judged to be similar to the recent death of a close friend or relative..."

People who speak multiple languages make the best employees for one big reason March 13, 2017 at 10:38PM

"Evidence is growing that proves cognitive benefits for bilinguals, such as that they can end up with improved attention, intelligence, and better verbal and spatial abilities. Likely as a result of structural changes in the networks and connections of the brain, this would suggest they have an increased capacity to process information. This is thought to happen because, like any brain games, logic, or visual exercises, language learning can stimulate and alter the structure of the brain in the same way that a person can build muscle mass. This could explain why multilingual individuals in a team promote cognitive diversity: Their brains all see problems and solutions in different ways. These findings show that bilingual people may have highly valued employment attributes: analytical thinking, conceptualizing ability, working memory, and dexterity. Clearly, these skills are assets when it comes to rational planning, managing complexity, and problem solving, which are central for executive function..."

Want happy kids? Give them more experiences and less stuff March 12, 2017 at 10:09PM

"The research left us wondering one question: does the size or type of the experience matter? Would a family outing to say, the local ice cream parlor, build as strong of a memory as a family vacation to Disney World? You'll be glad to hear that it doesn't matter. In fact, kids are more likely to have a strong, comforting memory of a special trip for ice cream in which their loved ones were engaged and happy than they would of an exciting but stressful trip to the "happiest place on earth"... And according to mom-of-five Sandra Modersohn's kids, who range in age from toddlers to tweens, "it's all about how relaxed mom and dad are about the whole thing." Trips with no agendas and no stress were the ones that her kids enjoyed the most."

It’s ‘digital heroin’: How screens turn kids into psychotic junkies March 11, 2017 at 05:01PM

"We now know that those iPads, smartphones and Xboxes are a form of digital drug. "You can't spoil a baby!" New research says to comfort crying babies March 11, 2017 at 02:22PM

Professor Narvaez encourages parents to be responsive to their child’s needs – to hold, touch and rock them as much as they want, knowing it is good for them. “What parents do in those early months and years are really affecting the way the brain is going to grow the rest of their lives,” she says. “(Children) grow better that way. And keep them calm, because all sorts of systems are establishing the way they are going to work. “If you let them cry a lot, those systems are going to be easily triggered into stress,” she adds.
