Messy Motherhood February 22, 2018 at 01:36PM

Abby is always good and gentle with other people, except for mommy. It is also true that she will always "reward" me with thousand crafts, hugs and kisses after every meltdown. It is OK. In this mostly very unforgiving adult's world, I would rather provide a safe harbor for her to come home and rest... 🤖👩‍👧💐⛈🌈🏡❤️#bizarretotbehavior #myfunnytoddlyvalentine
via Facebook http://ift.tt/2B1DZXX A tiny sweet, grandmotherly type approaches me at the end of one of our religious meetings. “Your daughter is so well behaved—you’re doing such a great job with her!” I smile graciously, hoping my grin is masking my deep-seated confusion. My daughter? My mind flashes to earlier in the day. To the screaming tantrums over (apparently incorrect) lunch choices. To the swatting hits when I don’t give her the makeup brush she’s crying for. To the timeouts—oh, the timeouts!—for “not listening,” followed by wailing “I’m sowwyyyyyyyy!” echoing through our townhouse (though, hopefully not through our shared wall—sorry, neighbors!) while she’s confined to her crib. The woman’s comments make me feel like a fraud. I’m doing such a great job with her? Me? Are you sure?

8 Things Never To Say To A Mom Of An Only Child December 02, 2017 at 10:26PM

I am usually not offended by this particular question, but this essay totally kills it! A mom should not be judged for having just one child. I am a single-child mom who is absolutely hands-on taking care of my toddler from day one. No daycare. No nanny. No servant. Not a single night I spend outside without being on standby for her needs. It can be tiring and frustrating. But I never miss any single one of her milestones. I believe in building a secured base since birth. As of today I see her growing into a mostly happy, loving, healthy, friendly and confident toddler (in lieu of tantrum fits 🤦🏻‍♀️). I don't know what the future holds but one day I wish I could proudly tell her that, I have always been by her side at least for the first two years when she was most needy and vulnerable. I am happy with Abby alone if it is meant to be. ❤️

"...the most important gift a father can give his children is "to love their mother". He explained that children need the role model of parents who love and are committed to each other for a lifetime. "In a day and age of instant gratification, of an almost throw-away culture, these old-fashioned values of commitment for the long term, loving your partner and making it a life's enterprise, I think this is even more essential in this day and age."

When you see the mom whose child is having a meltdown, here’s what she needs you to do July 26, 2017 at 09:36PM

"Step outside of your comfort zone offering a simple gesture of kindness and connection to a mom helping her child through a challenging moment." I will totally do that if it happens to any mom. I have fond memories of a stranger offering to read to my tot (after waiting too long in line) when a public tantrum was about to happen; as well as others who helped to distract or entertain her while I was paying for our grocery. 4 Rituals That Will Make You Happy, According to Neuroscience July 23, 2017 at 12:22PM

"Everything is interconnected. Gratitude improves sleep. Sleep reduces pain. Reduced pain improves your mood. Improved mood reduces anxiety, which improves focus and planning. Focus and planning help with decision making. Decision making further reduces anxiety and improves enjoyment. Enjoyment gives you more to be grateful for, which keeps that loop of the upward spiral going. Enjoyment also makes it more likely you’ll exercise and be social, which, in turn, will make you happier."

via Facebook http://ift.tt/2mRKlSU We’ve all had that annoying relative or friend who complains that we’re holding our baby too much, warning that too much holding will spoil our little cherub, or make them stuck to us like glue for all eternity. Comments like that can definitely get under a parent’s skin, especially at the beginning, when you sort of don’t know what the heck you’re doing and you’re a hot mess of doubt, worry, and hormones. The good news is that study after study has proven that holding your baby is not harmful in the least, and is actually a vital part of caring for babies in the early days, with long-term impacts on health and development.

A Plan For Raising Brilliant Kids, According to Science July 04, 2017 at 08:31PM

"You present something you call the 21st-century report card. And it contains six C's, which I've seen versions of elsewhere: collaboration, communication, content, critical thinking, creative innovation and confidence. But what's new is the way you relate these skills to each other, and also, you've described what they look like at four levels of development."

‘What do new mothers do all day?’ July 03, 2017 at 04:51PM

The first two years are the most intense and physical demanding, at least for me. Not everyone is lucky enough to get an "easy" baby. But I have no regret giving my best to her during the last 2 years. '... As much as you need and want a break now (and you should take one, more on that later), no mother has ever looked back on this time and thought, “I wish I had held my baby less.” You will not remember the dishes that didn’t get done, the vacuuming that you just couldn’t make happen, or the dirty clothes you wore more often than you’d like to admit. You will remember the first smile, the first belly laugh, the first words, the first steps. You will remember the way you looked at your baby, and the way your baby looked at you....'

What no one tells new moms about what childbirth can do to their bodies July 01, 2017 at 06:04PM

Some women have to go back to work 10 days after birth? Most women have to be discharged within 48 hours after birth? Wow! I met many moms telling me that post natal care is the least of their concerns; or they are "modern" super-moms who do not need that. Not everything being practiced in the West is the universal gold standard that the rest of us in the world must follow suit. If you do care about yourself, try get some postnatal help. I think I recovered quite well, thanks to my mom who did a great job providing postnatal care.
via Facebook http://ift.tt/2sdueBU Postnatal care in America is pitiful. The Senate health bill would make it worse.

Terry Gobanga: 'I was gang-raped on my wedding day' - BBC News June 30, 2017 at 11:01AM

"The most important thing is to mourn. Go through every step of it. Get upset until you are willing to do something about your situation. You have to keep moving, crawl if you have to. But move towards your destiny because it's waiting, and you have to go and get it." So much courage, and too inspiring!
via Facebook http://ift.tt/2u7k1sQ On the day a Nairobi pastor was due to get married a gang of men raped her, stabbed her and left her for dead. But Terry Gobanga is a survivor.

Sugar is the ‘alcohol of the child’, yet we let it dominate the breakfast table | Robert Lustig June 24, 2017 at 11:34AM

I really don't understand why so much sugar has to be added to children's diet...

Won't go back. My steak was slightly burned; and the foie gras was overcooked. When I made a complaint, I was told that it was meant to be that way. Don't fool me. I have tried foie gras in many countries around the world.

I gotta cut down eating my favorite French fries... 😭 "You can reduce your intake of acrylamide (a cancer causing chemical) by boiling or steaming starchy foods, rather than frying them," Schiff said. "If you do fry foods, do it quickly."
